Mona feels more American than Chinese because in one example, she converts to judaism and turns her back on her culture in a way. She still uses stereotypes to gain attention but, she does not actually follow or support her Chinese culture more than that. This shows how she is slowly viewing herself as more American than Chinese; therefore, her mother is upset because she is fine with the christmas tree and converting, which can be viewed as forgetting about where she came from.
